Fire fly in mothers house
Kunstverein Braunschweig, 2024
Installation views: Hannah Jung
A continuous loop of a single animated shot unfolds within the space of the artist’s grandparents’ house, which has been digitally reconstructed using photographs. Through the lens of an animated camera, the viewer traverses the intimate corners of this familiar yet uncanny house, a once inhabited space that is now haunted by the absence of its inhabitants.
The rooms and objects that once felt familiar transform into something eerie, as soon as the person who gave them life is no longer present. In this liminal world between life and death, an indefinable strangeness pervades everything. The items are neither fully existent nor completely erased; they turn into undead objects or zombie things.
The video projection is accompanied by fireflies painted on silk. As the luminosity of the cities increasingly darkens the once vibrant nights of the firefly dances, the oversized creatures serve as omen, evoking both the magic of childhood memories and the melancholy of vanishing wonder.
