Family Trip

Braunschweig International Film Festival, 2022

“Family Trip” is a multimedia installation that immerses its audience in an introspective journey through the complex dynamics of familial relationships. Created specifically for the Braunschweig International Film Festival in 2022, the site-specific installation blends various elements of technology, video and sound.

At the heart of the installation lies a meticulously staged scene within a car. A flat-screen TV is positioned on the back seat. The screen depicts three siblings, each occupying their respective seats within the vehicle, poised for an emotional exploration. Meanwhile, a smartphone, acting as both a window and a conduit, is placed at the wheel, projecting a live broadcast of their mother. Through this interconnected web of technology, the familial bond transcends physical distance and brings forth a deeply resonant narrative.

As the installation unfolds, the soundscape of a musical composition fills the urban space, emanating from the car’s speakers. These musical notes and artificial voices act as emotional cues. It is within this operatic soundscape that the family embarks on a metaphorical journey, transcending the confines of their physical surroundings to explore the intricate layers of their shared experiences.

“Family Trip” weaves a narrative that delves into the complexities of familial connections. It invites the audience to contemplate the fragility and strength that coexist within these relationships, exposing the tender emotions, shared memories, and underlying tensions that shape the fabric of family life.

By juxtaposing the presence of the siblings with the distant presence of their mother, the installation delves into themes of longing, separation, and the yearning for connection. It serves as a poignant reminder that family ties can simultaneously bind and estrange, evoking a profound sense of bittersweet nostalgia and the universal longing for emotional unity.
